25 THINGS TO DO IN PITTSBURGH


1.  Ride up Mt. Washington on the Duquesne Incline!  No visit to Pittsburgh is complete without a ride on one of the restored 1800s inclines - just across the river from downtown Pittsburgh. There are plenty of great restaurants to choose from on top of this former "Coal Hill," and the stunning view of downtown (especially beautiful at night) was ranked by USA Today as the second best beautiful place in America.

2.  Visit the Senator John Heinz History Center!  This former ice house has been reborn as a seven-story museum, with interactive exhibits that bring more than 250 years of Western Pennsylvania history to life.

3.  Visit the National Aviary!  Over 600 of the world's most incredible birds are displayed in naturalistic exhibits and walk-through habitats. Marvel at hummingbirds the size of a thumb or Andean Condors with giant 10-foot wingspans at the nation's premiere bird zoo!

4.  Stroll through The Strip where vendors, shops and exotic grocery stores offer everything from kitchenware to costumes and Steelers merchandise to fresh flowers and fish.

5.  Stop by the Andy Warhol Museum to see the most comprehensive single artist museum in the world houses more than 4,000 works of art, including paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, films, and videos, from this native Pittsburgh artist.

6.  Take in the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History where two world renowned museums combine in one unforgettable visit. Enjoy one of the best dinosaur exhibits in the world, breathtaking gems and minerals and an extensive Native American gallery.

7.  Stroll through the Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens; one of the largest Victorian "glass houses" in the country to see towering tropical plants that were the original seedlings at the 1890 Exposition, beautiful orchids, indoor and outdoor gardens, and a fabulous bonsai collection.

8.  Visit the Carnegie Science Center - an "amusement park for the mind"! At this large science museum, where more than 250 hands-on, interactive exhibits bring together science and fun for all ages.

9.  Race against an Olympic sprinter, try out your fastball, or climb a rock wall, all at the place where science and sports comes together – the UPMC SportsWorks!

10. Enjoy a meal at Primanti’s where you can enjoy your favorite sandwich served up complete with the coleslaw and fries rolled right in! Primanti's offer a wide variety of delicious sandwiches, with the cheesesteak being their most popular.

11. Experience one of the best wooden roller coasters in the world at Kennywood, one of only two amusement parks in the country to be designated a National Historic Landmark, and a favorite with roller coaster aficionados worldwide.

12. Take in a Pittburgh Pirates game at PNC Park!  The Pirates are home the week of School Building Expo taking on the New York Mets.  Be sure to check out the statue of Roberto Clemente between the Center Field entrance and Robert Clemente Bridge.

13. Tour Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers and University of Pittsburgh Panthers.  Tours of Heinz Field include a visit to the Coca-Cola Great Hall.

14. Cruise the Allegheny, Ohio and Monongahela Rivers aboard a Gateway Clipper Cruise riverboat to get the best views of Pittsburgh.

15. Check out the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium - one of only six major zoo and aquarium combinations
in the country! The Zoo is a 77-acre facility that is home to thousands of animals representing hundreds of diverse species.  The PPG Aquarium is 45,000-square-foot state-of-the-art aquarium. The $17.4 million facility flows with 380,000 gallons of salt and fresh water and houses more than 40 aquatic exhibits.

16. Fallingwater  is a Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece, now maintained by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. The structure of stone, concrete and glass is a staggering multi-level home cantilevered over an actual waterfall

17. Visit the Nationality Rooms at the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning. Twenty six rooms showcase furnishings and artifacts that represent the cultural backgrounds of various ethnic groups.

18. Considered one of architect Henry Hobson's greatest works, the Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail, is a magnificent Romanesque-style structure that occupies two square city blocks. The Bridge of Sighs, where convicts traversed from court to prison, is just part of this National Historic Landmark's rich history.

19. Enjoy a meal at the Grand Concourse.  This historic landmark was once the P&LE Railroad Station, and now offers some of Pittsburgh's best dining with a view. The main room, with grand arched ceiling, is inspiring and usually reverberates with chit-chatty diners.

20. Go off the beaten path to Lawrenceville which is located between the Strip District and Bloomfield.  This is an up and coming arts and design area with plenty of cool boutiques and galleries along the main corridor (Butler Street).

21. Catch a show at Pittsburgh’s Cultural District which features five major world-class theaters plus smaller performance venues and cutting-edge art galleries.

22. Children's Museum of Pittsburgh is consistently rated one of the best children's museums in the country. A recent expansion has quadrupled the size of the museum, and features interactive exhibits, a workshop, nursery, theater, and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.

23. The MLK Community Mural Project is the biggest and brightest art venture in Pittsburgh’s history, with murals scheduled to cover 26 walls throughout the city and already engaging hundreds of Pittsburgh’s biggest and brightest residents

24. The Waterfront is home to over 70 shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Our unique open-air shopping environment and beautiful landscaping provides an upscale shopping experience like no other.

25. Visit Point State Park is at the tip of Pittsburgh's "Golden Triangle." It commemorates and preserves the strategic and historic heritage of the area during the French and Indian War
